“Directly straight ahead lay the long dirt runway. Setting up for a low approach and flyby, we continued to scan the immediate area for any sign of activity. Suddenly, I began hearing multiple ticking sounds like gravel hitting the metal skin of the airplane. Instantly I realized what it was. ‘Dad, Dad . . . they’re shooting at us!’ Richard screamed. I immediately stuffed hard left rudder, banking the airplane in a steep fifty-degree left turn, when suddenly, a heavy spray of oil splattered the windscreen. I searched in every direction for any survivable place to put the airplane down. Quickly, I cut the power to idle and shut down the engine.”
