Nelson F Santiago is a contemporary abstract painter and adjunct professor at
Miami Dade College Florida. He received a MFA Degree from the University of Miami
and has participated in more the 10 group shows and had several two solo shows in the
United States. He has lived in Puerto Rico, Washington State, Texas, Okinawa,
Washington D.C., New York City and now lives in Miami Florida. His work is oil/acrylic
on canvas with the use of screen prints. His palette is bright and sometimes accented in
impasto and sand for texture.
The Artist says: “I often respond to the marks on the canvas so that there is no
preconceived thought intention. This allows me the freedom to tap into my center and
rise to a higher level of consciousness. Sometime a piece will lay around for several
months until one day I finally resolve the content and finish it. I have four Journals and
at any given time they are at my reach where things may be drawn or written for my
review. These are not in any chronological order but I always date the image or text.”
Again: “The work is abstracted but still realistic with no attempt at being photographic.
The imagery is some times Islander and Caribbean but can be guided by issues that are
either religious or political in nature.”
“The technique may be hand drawn or stamped with stencils from a screen I have
created, it is done in oil on canvas or acrylic entirely. At times the computer comes into
play and an image is developed entirely digitally.”
