This is the second book in the life of the brothers Aki, the Emerald Beetle, and Yoshi, the Golden Scorpion. In their quest to go back to Edo (Japan), they find themselves in a detour that takes them in the other direction—to Macua.
With new characters, Raul Diaz and Lyn Jiang, the brothers, with Miss Aki, become involved in a war between two main groups. One has to do with Chang Po and his pirates against a greedy landowner Pero Dias and his ex-cons. This time, Miss Aki takes part in fighting next to Aki with an almost near tragedy for the worse.
In part two, we find the brothers back in Edo, and with the help of Ota Dokan, start to establish themselves. Yoshi and Aki go to Aki's auntie's oyika, and Aki renews his relationship with Mariko and fights for her muzagi with a samurai Kobayakawa.
Yoshi leaves to find a girl he saved the year before named Kiko. There is another battle between Sohei Monks and another group of samurai. Yoshi saves Kiko and other orphans and takes them home to be his family.

Mary E. Montalvo has worked with students of all age groups for twelve years. She has developed the ability to listen to their fantasies and put them in a story. Her first book, Tomato Memories, was about a young man coming of age and falling in love with his childhood crush. Her succeeding books, The Legend of the Crimson Cricket and The Golden Scorpion and the Emerald Bettle reflect her knowledge of teenage boys as well as her love for animals. This is shown in her characters, Miss Aki and Kiko the monkey.
