Even the house the story was set in was based on an actual house that had oak floors, a fireplace, and a grandfather clock that hid little Tremor's house. And Tremor, one of the beloved characters in the book, appearing in most of the stories, had lived in the Thompsons' home in Prescott Valley, Arizona.
